광주항쟁을 전후해 ‘들불야학’을 주도했던 윤상원, 박관현, 윤상원과 영혼결혼식을 올린 박기순 등 실존인물 3인의 삶을 그린 장편 극영화. 사회정의 실현을 꿈꾸던 철기는 야학에 참여하면서 정치·사회적 모순과 민중의 현실에 대한 이해를 더해간다. 야학 선배 태일과 민숙, 노동자야학생 현실, 봉준 등과 공장 실태를 조사하던 그는 유신과 긴급조치의 부당성을 깨닫는다. 10.26 이후 총학생회장에 당선되어 대중집회를 주도하여 민주화를 향한 행보를 가져갈 무렵, 비상계엄확대에 따른 정치적 격변은 철기를 도피생활로 몰아넣는다.

Very few films, even today, deal with the Kwangju Masacre of 1988 where the military, acting under presidential orders, opened fire on the student demonstrations who were protesting at the coup of the rightfully elected president by General Chung. Thousands were killed and hundreds were arrested (including the winner of the Nobel Peace Prize, President Kim Dae-jung). This is a fictitious account of the events which serve as a sub-plot to a love story, but it was close enough so that it was not shown in most theaters until Chung's hand-picked successor was out of power in 1993.
