During the Allied occupation of Germany, a young Czech boy, is determined to reunite with his mother and keeps holding out hope that she is still alive, despite being taken to a concentration camp. He befriends by an American soldier, who teaches him English. As the soldier considers bringing the young man back to America, it becomes clear that nothing will stop his search for his mother.
