A celebration of life and family. An old woman on Brasil's seacoast has raised a chicken with care and attention. She walks all the way to town to sell it. She finds a buyer after several failures. Then she goes to a drug store to buy her grandson, who's a muscular hard-working and unmarried fisherman, a birthday present. The present she chooses, her slow walk home, his arrival from a day on the sea, and the giving of the gift complete the story. He showers and she sings.
