The Night We Never Met

Der junge Börsenmakler Brian McVeigh will auch nach der Hochzeit mit der reichen und schönen, aber ziemlich zickigen Janet Beehan sein kleines Appartement in Greenwich Village nicht aufgeben. Als er für jeweils zwei Abende seine Junggesellenbude an den Feinkostladen-Angestellten Sam und die verheiratete Zahnarzthelferin Ellen vermietet, kommt es zwischen den neuen Untermietern und Brian schon bald zu turbulenten Verwechslungen und amourösen Affären.

Sam Lester hitetlenkedve olvassa a hirdetés szövegét: "Patinás és hangulatos lakás kiadó hatalmas öbölre néző ablakokkal, igazi fatüzelésű kandallóval". Persze a dolognak van egy kis szépséghibája: a lakást csak hetente két nap használhatja, mert meg kell osztania azt két másik, a hetet "harmadában" bérlővel. Briannnak és Ellennek is van saját lakása, barátnője, férje, de ez a lakás jelenti számukra a béke, a hobby, a titkos szórakozás szigetét. Noha még egyszer sem találkozott a három ember, csakhamar részesei lesznek egymás életének. Ellen és Sam között lelki harmónia és barátság is kialakul. Amikor Ellen elérkezettnek látja az időt, fekete csipkeruhát ölt, pezsgőt és nagy levegőt vesz, majd elindul, hogy megismerkedjen Sammel. Nem tudja, hogy a lakásban a napját éppen elcserélő Briant találja.

Sam has a problem with his roommates: they are disgusting, and don't seem to share his views on responsibility, privacy, and basic hygine. Such is his discomfort with his living arrangements that he agrees to share the occupancy of another flat: he gets two nights a week, the owner (a sleazy frat-boy yuppie named Brian, soon to be married) and Ellen (a would-be painter seeking relief from her boring marriage) each get their seperate nights in the flat. Things go extremely well until Sam and Brian swap nights without telling Ellen, who attributes the "nice" things that happen around the place to the slob Brian, while berating the responsible Sam for his hedonistic lifestyle.
