桂木万里は、ドジで根暗な高校生。彼女は5歳の時、南太平洋に浮かぶ小さな島・ニューカレドニアの名を父・次郎がしてくれたおとぎ話で知った。そこは、神さまのいる天国から、いちばん近い島だという。突然、その父が亡くなり“天国にいちばん近い島”を自分の目で確かめてみたいと思った万里は、母・光子に相談し、冬休みのニューカレドニア・ツアーに参加する。
