The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus

Il Dottor Parnassus gira per le strade con il suo carrozzone dalle qualità particolari. In compagnia di un giovane, una fanciulla (sua figlia Valentina) e un nano mette in scena ovunque uno spettacolo che ha al suo centro uno specchio. Chi lo oltrepassa si trova in un mondo in cui puo' realizzare i suoi desideri piu' fantasiosi. Parnassus e' immortale ma ha conquistato questa dote grazie a una scommessa vinta con il Diavolo che ha assunto le sembianze del perfido Mr. Nick. Sono trascorsi i secoli e, nel momento in cui ha trovato il vero amore, il Dottore ha stipulato un nuovo patto con Mr. Nick il quale vuole che Valentina sia sua al compimento del sedicesimo anno di età. La data è ormai prossima.

2007年、ロンドン。旅芸人の一座が今にも壊れそうな馬車で現れる。座長は年齢1000歳以上といわれるパルナサス博士（クリストファー・プラマー）。出し物は、人の心の中の欲望を具現化する“イマジナリウム”と呼ばれる鏡。博士に導かれて鏡を通り抜けた観客は、自分の願望を反映した幻想世界を体験できるのだ。だが、怪しげな出し物に興味を持つ客はなく、博士は何かに怯えていた。実は、かつて偉大な僧侶だった博士。悪魔のMr.ニック（トム・ウェイツ）にそそのかされて、1人の女性に恋をしたことからすべてが始まった。不死と若さを手に入れる代わりに、生まれた娘が16歳になった時、彼に差し出す約束をしてしまったのだ。そうとは知らない博士の娘ヴァレンティナ（リリー・コール）。ある日彼女は、殺されそうになっていた青年トニー（ヒース・レジャー）を助ける。記憶喪失の彼は一座に加わると、巧みな話術で女性客を惹きつけ、ヴァレンティナも彼に心奪われる。そして期限の3日前。Mr.ニックが現れ、賭けに勝てば娘を渡さなくてもいいと博士に告げる。その賭けとは、鏡の世界に入り込んだ客に、悪魔の欲望の道と節度ある博士の道を選択させて、先に5人を獲得した方が勝ちというものだった。事情を知ったトニーは、次々と女性客を鏡の中へ誘導。そして、記憶を取り戻し、自分を殺そうとした男たちの姿に気付いたトニーも鏡の中へ逃げ込む。鏡の中で客の願望を形にしたトニー（ジョニー・デップ）は、次々と客を博士の選択へ導く。しかし残り1人になったとき、トニー自身の願望を反映したトニー（ジュード・ロウ）が誘導に失敗。追っ手と悪魔に迫られ、一緒に鏡の中へと逃げ込むトニーとヴァレンティナ。すると、ヴァレンティナの願望を反映したトニー（コリン・ファレル）が彼の真の姿を現す…。期限まであとわずか、博士とヴァレンティナの運命は……？

O Doutor Parnassus, líder de um espetáculo artístico, tem um obscuro segredo: há muitos anos, ele trocou a alma de sua filha com o diabo. Agora o diabo voltou para cobrar o acordo, e Dr. Parnassus terá que coletar cinco almas para salvar a jovem.

Outside a London pub, an elderly bearded sage named Doctor Parnassus runs a nearly-bankrupt travelling theater troupe, which includes his teenaged daughter Valentina, a sleight of hand expert and Barker (occupation) Anton, and a dwarf magician's assistant Percy. The troupe's main attraction is a portal to a magical "Imaginarium", a surreal dreamworld that transforms according to its participants' own desires and offers them a choice between difficult self-fulfillment or easy ignorance. After a drunkard is swayed to the latter, Parnassus says he has lost "another one" to Mr. Nick, a suave personification of the Devil, who often appears without warning to taunt Parnassus and gloat over Parnassus's failures. He reminds Parnassus that in three days Valentina turns 16, and her soul will belong to Mr. Nick. Hundreds of years ago, Mr. Nick tricked Parnassus into accepting immortality, after making a wager similar to his current predicament.
