The Gruffalo

Une petite souris se promène dans un bois très sombre. Elle rencontre un renard, un hibou et un serpent qui la trouvent bien appétissante et l’invitent chacun leur tour à déjeuner dans leur demeure. Mais la petite souris, très maligne, prétexte un rendez-vous avec… un Gruffalo ! Mais au fait, c’est quoi un Gruffalo ?

In een bos zonder planten vindt een moeder rode eekhoorn een noot. Haar kinderen spelen tot ze een uil horen toeteren. Dan ontsnapt de eekhoornmoeder aan de uil, maar haar kinderen willen dat ze hen een verhaal vertelt. Dus vertelt ze het verhaal van een muis die door een mooi bos loopt. Hij probeert een noot te vinden om op te eten, maar hij kan er geen vinden. Totdat hij een reis maakt naar een notenboom. Hij komt drie vleesetende dieren tegen die hem allemaal willen opeten - eerst een rode vos, dan een uil en dan een slang - en de dappere muis gebruikt zijn verstand om te overleven. Hij liegt tegen elk dier dat hij een monster met vreselijke trekken tegenkomt (hij noemt zijn denkbeeldige beest 'Gruffalo'), zegt dat het favoriete voedsel het dier is waar hij op dat moment mee praat en dat hij de Gruffalo "hier" ontmoet. Elk roofdier raakt dan in paniek en rent weg.

Then the squirrel mother escapes from the owl but her children want her to tell them a story. So, she tells the story of a mouse walking through a pleasant wood. He tries to find a nut to eat but he couldn't find one. Until he makes a journey to a nut tree. Encountering three carnivorous animals who all wish to eat him - first a Red Fox, then an owl, then a snake - the plucky mouse uses his wits to survive. He lies to each one that he is meeting a monster with terrible features (calling his imaginary beast a ‘Gruffalo’), says that its favorite food is whichever animal he is speaking to at the time, and that he is meeting the Gruffalo "right here". Each predator then panics and runs away.
