The film is a comedy drama, set around leading cricketer Sam Palmer's last appearance for England national cricket team. He desperately wants his son Syd to be there at The Oval to witness this, but Syd is more interested in writing poetry and meeting a leading poet, Alexander Whitehead. But when Syd meets Whitehead, it turns out he is a huge fan of cricket. Whitehead takes Reggie along to the match, in time to see Sam's innings, and he persuades him that there is more to cricket than he had previously thought.
