本美术片为水墨动画片，改编自庐山“白鹿洞书院”流传的美丽传说。 心地善良的老药农与孙女在深山摘采草药时，救下一只受了重伤的小鹿。在女孩的细心照料下，小鹿逐渐恢复健康，并与女孩成为形影不离的伙伴。而在女孩为保护它受了伤后，小鹿更是通人性地代她做了诸如上山采药、赶集卖药、采购食品等事。后来小鹿随女孩及爷爷在山上采药时，与失散的父母相遇，告别一刻，它与女孩难分难舍。
