In 1862 the Dakota Indians were bound by a treaty with the Federal government. It stated that in exchange for land to white settlers they would be paid a monthy allowance. The funds for the allowance were spent East fightning the ongoing Civil War. The Dakota began to starve and were reduced to "eating their own dung". After long weeks of starvation the tribes were enraged and attacked the stockade. The clerk was murdered and the goods raided. Within a week a thousand settlers were robbed and murdered. Once the dust settled the tribes were rounded up by the US Army and brought to Fort Snelling near Minneapolis. 38 were hanged in Mankato, Minnesota. The largest mass execution in US history.
