Rimasta vedova da poco, Gina si mette a lavorare come volontaria presso la scuola dei figli, dove conosce due bambini orfani di madre. Le due famiglie fanno presto amicizia.

Gina es una mujer que se queda viuda con dos niños pequeños, al tiempo que a Michael, un padre del colegio, también le sucede lo mismo cuando su mujer muere de cáncer, como el marido de Gina. When Matt Kell, husband and father to two young boys, succumbs to terminal cancer on Christmas day 2005, his widow, Gina is left to cope with the pain of his loss. Wanting to be close to her kids, Gina starts to volunteer at their elementary school and meets the Spehn children, Jack, Danny and Charlotte. In a tragic coincidence, just weeks after Matt’s death, the Spehns' mom, Cathy, was also suddenly taken by cancer, leaving her distraught husband, Michael, to care for their three kids on his own. Sensing the hopelessness in Michael that she so recently saw in herself, Gina reaches out to him and his kids and the two families begin to forge an unlikely friendship. During the year that follows, the lives of the two families become intertwined as they learn to lean on each other, beginning to heal with laughter, compassion and faith.

Tentando superar a morte do marido, Gina se oferece como voluntária na escola para ficar perto dos filhos. Ela se depara com uma inesperada coincidência quando Michael, pai de dois alunos da escola, também fica viúvo. Gina chce trávit co nejvíce času se svými syny, a proto se rozhodne pracovat jako dobrovolnice v jejich základní škole, kde se setkává s dětmi Jackem, Dannym a Charlottou.

Gina Kell's élete teljesen megváltozik, amikor hosszas betegség után elveszíti a férjét, Mattet.
