Az önhibáján kívül tönkrement Lóránt báró Amerikában kezd új életet hűséges inasával, Péterrel. Pincérként dolgoznak egy bárban. Amikor a báró egyik vendégében nagybátyjára ismer, helyzetét szégyellvén megtagadja a kiszolgálást, ezért elbocsátják. Ekkor sorsjegyen megnyeri egy vidéki farm hatodrészét. Beleszeret az egyik társtulajdonosba, Mary Turnerbe. Nem is sejti, hogy a lány milliomos.

Baron Lóránt, now bankrupt for reasons for which he cannot be blamed, starts a new life in America, accompanied by Péter, his faithful valet. They both work as waiters in a bar. One day he refuses to serve his uncle and is given the sack.
