Dans une principauté italienne, vers 1830. Le vieux professeur Henri Faust fête ses cinquante ans de carrière universitaire. Rempli d'amertume, le vieillard constate qu'en consacrant sa vie à la science, il a omis l'essentiel. Soudain, Méphistophélès, un démon truculent envoyé par Lucifer, lui apparaît et lui propose de lui rendre sa jeunesse. Henri accepte et retrouve aussitôt ses 20 ans. Il ne tarde pas à faire la connaissance d'une charmante bohémienne, Marguerite, mais il comprend bien vite que la jeunesse n'est rien sans argent. C'est alors que Méphistophélès se manifeste à nouveau...

Henri Faust, retiring after 50 years as a professor in a circa-1700 French university, despairs at the ravages of old age ... whereupon Mephistopheles, agent of Lucifer, appears as a virile, handsome young man and exchanges bodies with him to induce Faust to sign a pact to exchange his soul for renewed youth, riches and power. But though the "new" Faust is attracted by the material improvements in his life, he remains wary of signing, while Mephistopheles, now posing as the aged professor whose body he inhabits, must find a way to trick him into signing the pact - and dissuade him from the love of a gypsy girl who prays for his soul - or find himself damned by his own Master...

Старый профессор Фауст, всю жизнь искавший эликсир бессмертия, но добившийся лишь старости, одиночества и букета болезней, получает от посланника ада Мефистофеля предложение, от которого невозможно отказаться. Суть его известна всем — получить молодость, здоровье и красоту в обмен на бессмертную душу! Профессор соглашается, забыв, правда, что с обретением нового тела он лишится своего дома и всего имущества. Но что это в сравнении с вновь обретенными радостями… Шкодливый же Мефистофель, нарушая условия договора, сначала вселяется в тело и дом профессора, а затем старается побыстрее получить и душу своего умного и шустрого пациента.
