A la fin de l'année 1916, le Flamand Van Horst, aventurier et coureur de jupons, part au Canada dans l'espoir d'y retrouver Maria, un amour de jeunesse. Il croise sur sa route Olivier, un adolescent avec qui il se lie d'amitié. Tous deux arrivent sur les rives du Saint-Laurent, au Bar de la Fourche, un établissement tenu par Maria.
