Pourchassé par des officiers Mandchous, San Te se réfugie dans un temple Shaolin où il suit un entraînement rigoureux. Chacune des chambres se spécialise dans un aspect de la discipline, allant du maniement du sabre à l'illumination, en passant par la force des poignets et l'acuité visuelle.

A young student named Liu Yude is drawn by his activist teacher into the local rebellion against the Manchu Qing dynasty. The government officials, headed by the brutal General Tien Ta, however, quickly discover and suppress the uprising, extrajudicial killing the school and killing the students' friends and family members. Yude decides to seek Revenge and liberation for the people, and heads for the Shaolin Monastery to learn kung fu (term).

Os inimigos da disnatia Ching, liderados por Ho Kuang-Han, estão secretamente instalados em Canton, disfarçados de mestres de artes-marciais.
