农村义务邮递员马鸣在路上与伙伴赛车，被自行车人教练丁逸群注意，让他去找报考自行车队。但是报考的时间已过，乔领队让他明年再来。丁教练与乔领队发生争执。一列列车奔驰而来，一侧是三套马车，另一侧是自行车队。马突然受惊，嘶叫着向铁道冲来，马鸣不顾自身安危，拦住惊马，乔领队受感动，接受了他。经营三年训练，马鸣成了优秀的队员。一次比赛中了了意外，为不伤及同伴，他自己故意摔倒，抬着自行车跑到终点，赢得尊重。后来，参加国际自行车友谊赛，不负重望，为国争光。
