Run Silent, Run Deep

En 1942, dans le vaste théâtre du Pacifique, le commandant Richardson (Clark Gable) fait face à une tragédie personnelle lorsqu'il perd son sous-marin, victime d'une attaque du destroyer japonais Akikaze dans le détroit de Bungo. Un an plus tard, à Pearl Harbor, il est chargé de commander un nouveau submersible, le Nerka. Cependant, son retour en mer est entaché par l'hostilité de son second, le lieutenant Bledsoe (Burt Lancaster), qui espérait prendre sa place, ainsi que par le mécontentement d'un équipage qui se montre réticent à suivre un homme marqué par son passé. Hanté par le souvenir de son naufrage, Richardson s'engage à préparer ses hommes à des manœuvres de tir et de plongée rapide, déterminé à retrouver l'Akikaze et à venger la perte de son précédent navire. Au fil de cette odyssée, il devra faire face non seulement à des ennemis extérieurs, mais aussi à ses propres démons intérieurs.

A World War II United States Navy submarine officer, Commander (United States) P.J. Richardson (Clark Gable), is determined to get revenge on an ace Japanese destroyer captain, nicknamed "Bungo Pete", who has sunk four US submarines in the Bungo Channel, including his previous command. He persuades the Navy Board to give him a new submarine command with the provision that his executive officer be someone who has just returned from active sea patrol. He single-mindedly trains the crew of his new boat, the USS Nerka, to return to the Bungo Straits and sink Bungo Pete, in spite of the Navy's expressly forbidding him from approaching the Bungo Straits on this mission. Richardson's executive officer, Lieutenant Commander Jim Bledsoe (Burt Lancaster), is worried about the safety of his boat and his crew. He also resents Richardson and the Navy leadership for denying him command of the ''Nerka'', which he believes should have been his.
