Victor Colinet est retraité des chemins de fer. Passionné de musique, il consacre tout son temps libre à jouer et forme un joyeux trio à cordes avec deux amis. Deux fois par semaine, Victor médite sur la tombe d'un illustre compositeur italien, Attilio Alboretti, qu'un bel adagio a rendu célèbre. Un beau jour, le fantôme du musicien interpelle Victor et lui propose de lui dicter les notes de quelques mélodies.
