創立100周年を迎える東西新聞社は、記念事業として最高の料理をよりすぐる“究極のメニュー”を企画、優れた味覚を持つ2人の記者、問題児の山岡と新米の栗田が担当に選ばれる。同社は監修役を希代の美食家にして陶芸の大家、海原雄山に依頼していたが、雄山は担当が山岡と知ると監修を降りてしまった。翻意を促そうと社主とともに雄山の屋敷を訪ねた栗田は、雄山と山岡がある理由から確執が生じた実の親子であると知る。
