Clark Griswold a décidé de fêter Noël comme il se doit : il va couper lui-même son sapin avec sa petite famille, il invite ses parents, ses beaux-parents, sa tante et son oncle, et il a même décidé de décorer la maison entière de 25.000 ampoules ! Cependant, tout ne se passe pas comme prévu : les ampoules refusent de s'allumer, son cousin Eddie débarque à l'improviste du Kansas et il attend désespérément la prime de Noël qui lui permettra enfin de payer la piscine qu'il a commandée en secret.

With Christmas only a few weeks away, Chicago resident Clark Griswold decides it is time to get a Christmas tree. He gathers his wife Ellen, daughter Audrey, and son Rusty and drives out to the country where he picks out a huge tree. Realizing too late that they didn't bring any tools to cut the tree down, they are forced to uproot it instead, before driving home with the tree strapped to the roof of their car.
