Jérôme Rocheville, un homme mûr, vient d'épouser une jeune et jolie femme. Cette union, aussi agréable soit-elle, lui impose de nouvelles responsabilités, notamment matérielles. Fauché, il décide de reprendre son métier d'architecte. Sa bonne volonté ne suffit pas : il échoue lamentablement.
