9살 소년 수영(천영덕)은 해녀 일을 하는 엄마(나영희)와 오래 전 배를 타고 나갔다가 소식이 없는 아빠를 기다리며 살고 있다. 어느 날 도시에서 독고 아저씨(이영하)란 사람이 수영의 집에 하숙을 들어오고, 독고 아저씨가 엄마를 애무하는 광경을 본 수영은 엄마를 뺏길 것 같은 위기감에 아저씨를 경찰에 신고한다. 민중소설가로 반체제적인 글을 써서 쫓기고 있던 아저씨는 경찰에게 붙잡혀 가고, 아저씨의 사연을 알지 못하는 수영은 단지 아저씨가 없어진 것에 안심을 하고 고모네 집에 놀러가 방학을 보낸다. 그러나 수영이 집에 돌아왔을 때 엄마는 이미 독고 아저씨와 집을 나가고 없음을 알게 되는데...

A 9-year-old boy, Sooyoung, lives with her mother, who works as a haenyeo worker, and waits for her father who has not heard from him. One day in the city, a man named Dokgo enters Sooyoung's house and sees Uncle Dokgo caressing her mother. The uncle, who was being chased by the folk novelist for writing dissident writing, is arrested by the police, and Sooyoung, who does not know the story of the uncle, is just relieved that the uncle is gone and spends a vacation at her aunt's house to play. However, when Sooyoung returns home, she finds out that her mother has already left the house with Uncle Dokgo.
