Une jeune femme vit retirée dans une grande maison à Joigny, une petite ville de l'Yonne. La vie y est calme et douce malgré l'hiver qui n'en finit pas. De leur côté, un policier et un gendarme enquêtent sur un crime mystérieux qui scelle pour eux une histoire d'amitié. Mais lorsque le policier tombe amoureux de la jeune femme, il abandonne son ami.
