Début XXe siècle. Henri Fortin, accusé à tort d'avoir tué son patron, le comte de Villeneuve, est condamné au bagne. En 1940, devenu déménageur, il aide André Ziman, sa femme Élise et leur fille Salomé à fuir les persécutions nazies. Pendant leur voyage vers le Jura, il se fait raconter l'histoire de Jean Valjean, surnom qui lui a été donné en hommage à sa grande force physique.
