Armé de jumelles et d'un carnet, un explorateur traverse la jungle de Bornéo. Il se déplace au crépuscule et à la tombée de la nuit à la recherche d'orangs-outans. Il les contemple, les étudie, les dessine. Au cours de ses recherches, deux histoires sont évoquées : une fable tirée du Système de la Nature de Carl Linnaeus et le témoignage du gardien de la Ménagerie du Jardin des Plantes.
