戦後の混乱がまだ残る日本。元兵士の戸田は、戦争中に戦友の代わりに、戦死通知を受けた遺族に手紙を書き続けるという役目を担っていた。ある日、彼はかつて手紙を送り続けた女性・山本アキと偶然再会する。アキは、亡き夫への思いを胸に抱きながらも、戸田に対して複雑な感情を抱き始める。 ふたりは戦争がもたらした心の傷と向き合いながら、次第に惹かれ合っていくが、過去の影は容易に消えず、愛と罪のはざまで揺れ動く――。
