Les carnavals étaient un divertissement populaire à la fin du XIXe siècle, avec des manèges, des radiographies, des jeux d'adresse, des animaux sauvages, des hommes forts, des contorsionnistes et même des cinémas sous tente. Les spectacles de monstres à mi-chemin, les géants, les nains et les femmes barbus étaient des attractions publiques particulièrement puissantes.
