Ispirato a un fatto realmente avvenuto nel Nord Atlantico nel 1961, il film racconta l'eroismo del capitano Alexei Vostrikov che, al culmine della Guerra Fredda, riceve l'ordine di sostituire il capitano Mikhail Polenin al comando del sottomarino nucleare K19, per affrontare un'esercitazione che serve a dimostrare agli americani quanto sia potente l'armamento dell'Unione Sovietica.

In 1961, the Soviet Union launches its first ballistic missile nuclear submarine, the Soviet submarine K-19, commanded by Captain Alexei Vostrikov (Harrison Ford), aided by executive officer Mikhail Polenin (Liam Neeson). Polenin was the crew's original captain, and they have served together for some time; Vostrikov's appointment is alleged to have been aided by his wife's political connections, as well as Polenin's tendency to put the crew's morale and safety before the pride of the Soviet Union. During his first inspection, Vostrikov discovers the reactor officer to be drunk and asleep on duty and sacks him, ordering Polenin to request a replacement.

El Capitán Mihhail Polenin (Liam Neeson), además de contar con la confianza y el cariño de sus hombres, es considerado y respetado como el capitán de submarinos con mayor experiencia de la Marina soviética. Sin embargo, es destituido del mando del K-19 porque sus superiores juzgan que no está en condiciones de ponerlo a punto para la hora y fecha previstas. Su sustituto es el Capitán Alexei Vostrikov (Harrison Ford), un oficial con una voluntad de hierro, que consigue que el K-19 emprenda la travesía exactamente a la hora programada: las 16:00 horas del día 18 de Junio de 1961...
