On April 14, 2010, air traffic over Europe came to a halt. Millions of passengers were stranded at airports, airline losses climbed to dizzying sums. The cause was a cloud of volcanic dust that escaped into the atmosphere during the third eruption this year of the Icelandic volcano with the mythical-sounding name of Eyjafjallajokull. Previous - March - eruptions scared the inhabitants of the island state and worried volcanologists. The April eruption proved that our Earth is actually quite small and that volcanoes in geologically exposed places - such as Iceland and Kamchatka - can affect the life of the entire planet.
