Meteorology student Pavel "Pasha" Danilov (Grigoriy Dobrygin) is spending the summer as an intern at an isolated, Soviet-era weather station on a remote Arctic island with only the older, experienced Geophysics Sergei Gulybin (Sergei Puskepalis) for company. Their sole job is to collect the weather and tide statistics every four hours on antiquated equipment, which they do in shifts, and report the readings by radio to the state meteorology center. Pasha is respectful and friendly, but he is afraid of the gruff Sergei, who is condescending to him, as he resents Pasha's temporary stay and is jealous that he knows how to operate their only computer.
Dois homens trabalham em uma pequena estação metereológica em uma ilha russa isolada no Oceano Ártico. Seu trabalho é fazer leituras da radioatividade do terreno e transmiti-las para a sede por rádio. Para um profissional experiente como Sergei, de 50 anos, este trabalho tornou-se rotina. Seu novo companheiro de trabalho é Pavel, um estudante recém-formado e designado a passar o verão na estação.
