The story was born from Skyler's own fears of coming out to his classmates as transgender after only a year of being out to family and friends. Skyler came up with the story of Terran, who is gender variant and does not conform to male nor female pronouns, in hopes of bringing more visibility to transgender issues. "House Not Home" is dedicated to Leelah Alcorn, a fellow trans teen from Ohio who committed suicide in January because her parents would not allow or accept her transition. In her suicide note posted on Tumblr, she wrote: "Gender needs to be taught about in schools, the earlier the better. My death needs to mean something." An extended version of this quote is showed at the start of "House Not Home."
