Der 22-jährige Simon Dallinger ist künstlerisch begabt und hat vor einigen Jahren das Abitur gemacht. Aber statt hinaus in die weite Welt zu gehen, ist er bei seinem Job als Schulbusfahrer hängen geblieben. Simons Vater Hans, früher ein gefeierter Architekt, ist an Schizophrenie erkrankt und hält die Familie immer wieder mit heiklen Aktionen in Atem. Seine Mutter Elli hat die Ernährerrolle übernommen und arbeitet oft bis spät in die Nacht. Es ist Simon, der den Haushalt schmeißt und sich liebevoll um seine kleine Schwester Maja kümmert. All dies wäre anders, so glaubt Simon, wenn sein Vater endlich einsähe, dass er krank ist und sich behandeln lassen würde.

Depuis qu'il a été diagnostiqué schizophrène, Hans Dallinger, architecte renommé, a perdu la direction du cabinet qu'il a fondé avec Jochen, son meilleur ami. Il continue malgré tout à s'investir dans son travail. A la maison, sa femme Elli et leur fils Simon, 23 ans, font de leur mieux pour que sa santé mentale instable ne perturbe pas Maja, la benjamine de la famille. Mais après avoir détruit, au cours d'une crise de paranoïa, la parabole de leurs voisins, Hans récidive et s'en prend violemment aux réparateurs. Interpellé par la police, il est placé en hôpital psychiatrique. Alors qu'il vient de faire la connaissance de Verena, une jeune étudiante en médecine, Simon est terrifié à l'idée de développer la même pathologie que son père. Egalement sous le choc, Elli préfère cacher leur lourd secret...
