'국제시장2'는 덕수와 함께 파독 광부로 일했던 성민, 그리고 그의 아들 세주의 이야기를 중심으로 전개된다. 1970년대부터 2000년대까지의 시간을 아우르는 이번 속편은, 1987년 6월 항쟁, 1992년 문민정부 출범, 1997년 IMF 외환위기, 2002년 한일 월드컵 등 대한민국 근현대사의 굵직한 사건들을 배경으로 삼아 시대의 희비를 담아낼 예정이라고 전해졌다.
