Un adulte enfant se jette ou presque de la tour Eiffel et tombe dans les rues de New York, comme un somnambule tombe d'un mur, il cherche la rencontre avec l'impossible, filmer un absent pour connaître les secrets de la création d'une œuvre. Faire la route jusqu'à Mabou, Nouvelle-Ecosse – Robert Frank – c'est lui qu'on veut connaître – y a construit une maison en bois près d'une mer gelée qui parfois se brise en morceaux emportés par le vent. Il habite là. Et cherchant comment se faire, le film se fait. On ne sait pas de quoi il est fait. D'amour, d'admiration, d'un long travail aussi. Le résultat, un chef d'œuvre transparent qui reste ouvert à l'indéfini en route vers l'irrejoignable.
