Florida Crackers

The story of this little-known pioneer culture dates back to 1521, when Juan Ponce de Leon landed in what later became Florida and introduced the first cattle and horses into North America. Centuries later, settlers of mainly Celtic and British descent began moving into Florida and rounding up the Spanish-descended cattle and horses. Some descendants of these pioneering families are still working cattle on Florida ranch lands to this day. For the first time ever in a feature-length documentary film, "Florida Crackers" has captured the story of these real-life modern cowboys: their history, their culture, and the uncertain future they face as they strive to preserve their way of life in a fast-paced modern world.
