Brian Sweeney "Fitzcarraldo" Fitzgerald (Klaus Kinski) is an Irishman living in Iquitos, a small city east of the Andes in the Amazon Basin in Peru in the early part of the 20th century, when the city grew exponentially during the rubber boom. He has an indomitable spirit, but is little more than a dreamer with one major failure already behind him – the bankrupted and incomplete Transandine Railway. A lover of opera and a great fan of the internationally known Italian tenor Enrico Caruso, he dreams of building an opera house in Iquitos. Numerous Europeans and North African Sephardic Jewish immigrants have settled in the city at this time, bringing their cultures with them. The opera house will require considerable amounts of money, which the booming rubber industry in Peru should yield in profits. The areas in the Amazon Basin known to contain rubber trees have been parceled up by the Peruvian government and are leased to private companies for exploitation.

Der exzentrische Brian Sweeney Fitzcarraldo ist von der Idee besessen, mitten im unberührten Amazonas-Dschungel ein großes Opernhaus zu bauen. Von den Ersparnissen seiner Freundin, der Bordell-Besitzerin Molly, kauft Fitzcarraldo einen alten Flussdampfer. Damit will er in ein unerschlossenes Kautschukgebiet schippern, um dort das Geld für den Bau des Opernhauses zu erwirtschaften. Ureinwohner helfen ihm dabei, seinen Kautschukhandel voranzutreiben.

Brian Sweene Fitzgerald, plus connu sous le nom de Fitzcarraldo, rêve de construire le plus grand opéra du monde à Iquitos, au cœur de l’Amazonie. Pour gagner l’argent nécessaire à son projet, il achète une concession de caoutchouc le long du fleuve Uycali, réputé inaccessible à cause de violents rapides. Pour atteindre sa concession, Fitzcarraldo choisit de descendre le fleuve Pachitea, séparé de l’Uycali seulement par une montagne. Il devra hisser son bateau à vapeur en haut de la montagne pour basculer sur l’autre versant. Sa tentative finit par échouer et Fitzcarraldo transforme son navire en théâtre en accueillant chanteurs et musiciens pour un spectacle unique au cœur de la forêt amazonienne.
