Bankdirektor John Valera ist ein Mann von Welt, ein umwerfend aussehender Gentleman von Kopf bis Fuß. Müde von seinem Geschäft verlässt er eines Tages alles, um sich auszuruhen, verlässt seinen Arbeitsplatz in Berlin und reist inkognito nach Italien, wo er sich entspannen und Urlaub machen möchte wie nie zuvor. Da sein Reisebudget immer knapper wird, scheut Valera sich nicht, verschiedene Jobs anzunehmen und verdient seinen Lebensunterhalt als Jazztrompeter, Diener, Chauffeur und Assistent einer Diebesbande.
