The Holy Grail War: a competition in which Mages summon Heroic Spirits and vie against each other in pursuit of the Holy Grail, a wish-granting machine that can grant any and all wishes. Several years after the conclusion of the Fifth Holy Grail War in Japan, the next war is about to manifest in a place called Snowfield in the western United States. It is a Holy Grail War that is full of false things. Mages and Heroic Spirits have gathered together on a false pedestal. Even though they know that this is a false Holy Grail War, they continue to dance on the pedestal. What is true and what is false will be settled in the next life. They do it not for the Holy Grail but to uphold their own beliefs and nothing more.

Fate/strange Fake se déroule aux alentours de 2009. L'intrigue est centrée sur une fausse guerre du Graal copiée de la Troisième guerre du Saint Graal à Fuyuki. Après la fin de cette dernière, une organisation américaine dont les membres sont des mages détachés de l'Association des Mages située à Londres a récupéré des données de la guerre du Graal de Fuyuki et a planifié son propre rituel. Soixante-dix ans plus tard, ils ont utilisé la ville de Snowfield comme Terre Sacrée pour leur propre Guerre du Graal. Ils n'ont cependant pas réussi à copier tous les aspects du rituel, ce qui transformé la guerre en une simple imitation qui a perdu la classe Saber et a permis l'invocation de Servants étranges en raison de la définition floue de "héros".

魔術師們為追尋實現一切心願的願望機「聖杯」，而召喚英靈藉以彼此競爭的爭奪戰——聖杯戰爭。在日本這片土地舉行的第五次聖杯戰爭終結後，過了幾年，美國西部的雪原市「史諾菲爾德」出現了下一場鬥爭。那是充滿虛偽的聖杯戰爭，聚集於虛偽台座的魔術師與英靈們。即使深知這是場虛偽的聖杯戰爭，他們仍舊在此之上不斷舞動。真偽即在遙遠的彼岸，並非為了聖杯，也非為其他任何事物，而是為貫徹他們自身的信念。然而就在此刻，注滿容器的究竟是虛偽或真實？

La storia ha luogo circa settant'anni dopo la terza guerra per il sacro Graal combattuta a Fuyuki, quando una organizzazione di maghi separata da quella di Londra e con base in America progetta di creare una propria guerra per il possesso del Graal sottraendo informazioni all'associazione inglese. Messo in atto il loro piano nella città di Snowfield, non riescono a riprodurre tutti gli aspetti del rituale: manca infatti all'appello il servant della classe Saber, mentre le altre classi di servant evocati risultano essere dei soggetti decisamente "strani" per via di una insolita impostazione del concetto di eroe...
