Robert Fischer und Ulli Lommel begeben sich auf die Suche nach Einflüssen von Hollywood auf Fassbinders Werk und Spuren, die der Autorenfilmer selbst in der Traumfabrik hinterließ. Zu Wort kommen Fassbinder-Freunde wie Kameramann Michael Ballhaus und Regisseur Wim Wenders, die dessen Traum von Amerika für sich verwirklichten. Von Hanna Schygulla erfährt man darüber hinaus Interessantes über die Beziehung des deutschen Filmemachers zu seinem großen Vorbild Douglas Sirk, dem Meister des Hollywood-Melodrams.
