Channel 5 did a documentary about the strange creatures of the deep, both mythical and factual. The narration pointed out that underwater is “an alien environment”, and that it is also in fact “the majority of the Earth” rather than land. Water covers 70% of the Earth’s surface but only 5% of our oceans have been explored. To use a sea-based metaphor, we are just at the tip of the iceberg. It’s little wonder thoughts of what might dwell underwater have inspired myth and legend in the past and present.
