Esther is een verpleegkundige in een inrichting. Zij maakt kennis met Leo en zij verloven zich. Door de ontruiming en het transport naar Westerbork en daarna naar Duitsland, waarbij Esther bij haar patiënten blijft, verliezen ze elkaar uit het oog.
