Eskimo

Mala is a member of an unspecified Eskimo tribe living in Alaska. He has a wife, Aba, and 2 children. He and the villagers are shown welcoming a newcomer from another village, a hunter with 2 wives. The villagers hunt walrus, and celebrate the hunt. Mala learns of white traders at nearby Tjaranak Inlet from another Eskimo. Mala learns about rifles and desperately wants one, and Aba longs for sewing needles and other white men's goods. Mala and Aba travel by dog sled to the trading ship with their children, stopping to build an igloo along the way. They encounter an old friend whose wife died about a month before. Mala offers his friend the opportunity to have sex with a willing Aba, which comforts their friend, and they part ways contentedly. When they reach the ship, the Caucasian race ship captain takes all of Mala's tanned animal skins in exchange for a single rifle. The captain demands that Aba spend the night with him. He gets her drunk, pouring alcohol down her throat, gives her worthless trinkets, and has sex with her. Mala is upset because the captain is not a friend and demanded sex rather than asking, but is told by an English-speaking Eskimo, Akat, that "the white man is always right". Mala demands that the captain promises him that Aba will not be molested again.
