Guiseppe Penone, sculpteur issu de l'Arte Povera, ouvre son atelier au professeur Michel Merle, chirurgien spécialisé dans la micro-chirurgie de la main. L'empreinte, le temps et la nature sont des thèmes qui passionnent l'un et l'autre. Dans une forêt mystérieuse faite d'arbres mutants, le professeur entame une leçon d'anatomie en faisant référence à l'oeuvre de Penone.
