Isa is a courageous and headstrong young woman living in Germany during the time of Nazi rule. Her plans to become a teacher are nixed when she is denied her school leaving certificate, in spite of having successfully passed all exams, because she performs a satirical anti establishment song at the graduation ceremony. Isa now decides to make a living as a cabaret performer, a career choice her parents are not happy with. She soon becomes a success as a singer and accordion player, and she meets a young pianist with whom she falls in love. She also makes the acquaintance of a young countess who is involved in a Catholic organization, and the two women become close friends. Meanwhile, Isa learns, to her dismay, that her father is having an extramarital affair, but she hopes and believes that it will blow over and things will straighten themselves out for her parents.
