Sherap Sangpo war eigentlich ein ganz gewöhnlicher Hirtenjunge im Dolpo, einer an Tibet grenzenden Region im Nordwesten Nepals. Als 10-Jähriger begegnet der Junge aus der abgeschiedenen Region dem Dalai Lama und beschließt daraufhin, Mönch zu werden. Dafür reist er nach Kathmandu, wo er als Reinkarnation eines hochstehenden Dalai Lamas erkannt wird. Nach 16 Jahren Ausbildung im Exil kehrt er als Dolpo Tulku und religiöses Oberhaupt zurück in seine Heimat, wo er sehnlichst erwartet wird.
