Coelacanth (SEEL-uh-kanth): a large fish with limblike fins, armored scales and a tail that no other living fish possesses. This prehistoric fish was thought to have died out with the dinosaurs in the great extinction. It has laid hidden deep in our oceans undisturbed and undetected for 70 million yearsa true living fossil. The coelacanth is thought to be related to the creatures that grew legs, breathed air and came ashore nearly 400 million years ago.
Dix ans après la découverte stupéfiante d'un coelacanthe vivant, pêché au large des côtes sud-africaines, le zoologiste et plongeur Dr Richard Pyle se prépare à explorer les fonds marins pour trouver cet animal d'une autre ère. Il était déjà connu de la communauté scientifique, mais uniquement sous forme de fossile et on pensait qu'il avait disparu avec les dinosaures. Pour rencontrer l'animal, l'équipe devra plonger à 120 mètres environ sous la surface, une profondeur réellement dangereuse pour le corps humain... Mais une telle mission ne saurait se dérouler sans difficultés.
