Krimiautor Leo Leitner wird in Wien überraschend mit dem Leo Perutz-Preis ausgezeichnet. Widerwillig folgt er seiner Verlegerin in die österreichische Bundeshauptstadt, wo er von der Wiener Gesellschaft in Empfang genommen wird. Während der Preisverleihung kommt es zu einem tragischen Zwischenfall. Burgtheater-Schauspieler Staberny wird tot auf der Toilette aufgefunden, vermutlich Selbstmord. Leos kriminalistisches Gespür ist geweckt. Natürlich glaubt er an Mord.
