Sous les barreaux depuis cinq ans, Marthe, une prostituée, ne décolère pas d'avoir été enfermée pour un crime qu'elle n'a pas commis. Enfin libérée, la jeune femme décide de se venger et de retrouver le vrai coupable, son proxénète. Mais en chemin vers Nantes, dans un train, Marthe est troublée par Louis Paimboeuf, un charmant professeur d'histoire.
