In an over-industrialized near future, climate change in the form of global cooling has shrunk available farmland and a worldwide famine has ensued. Bands of raiders are out to steal whatever food they can. Mort Logan leads such raids, selling black-market food to people in cities. Hydroponic farmer Grant Franklin and his family are among the few people with any food to spare. Charles Ennis, a wealthy man from Toronto, obtains food from Franklin for his sickly daughter only to be robbed by Logan's gang. Ennis manages at a cost to obtain a very small supply from Logan, and warns Franklin that Logan and his crew plan to take over his farm. Franklin and his son fight off Logan, killing him and his thugs using farm machinery, losing some of their own people in the process. It seems likely that this is not the end of their troubles.
