TV-Kriegsdrama um Zivilcourage. Nach der gleichnamigen Erzählung von Anna Seghers Ihre Brüder und der Verlobte sind im Krieg. 1944 schlägt sich Marta (Walfriede Schmitt) allein mit ihrer Gärtnerei durch. Eines Tages taucht ein Deserteur bei ihr auf. Was tun? Marta beschließt, Steiner (Klaus-Peter Thiele) bei sich zu behalten. Eine lebensgefährliche Entscheidung: Feldjäger durchkämmen das Dorf… Ohne zu glorifizieren, erinnert der Film an die kleinen Helden des Alltags.
